Creative Being prompt, April 2013

"While the river of life glides along smoothly, it remains the same river; only the landscape on either bank seems to change."
(Max Muller)

Rivers have always been a powerful symbol.  Water is linked to the ideas of flow, release, healing and sexuality in many traditions.  A river contains so many different ecosystems, both in it's waters, shallows and on the banks.  So many stories, triumphs and tragedies take place both on and beside the waters, and still the river flows past, always moving and changing.

Our ancestors often built their homes near rivers, to be close to the source of water and food - but not too close, in case the river rose up and carried them away!  This is why many cities, my own home city of Southampton included, has a river running through it.  Almost every river has a deity, or a legend, associated with it.

Rivers are powerful metaphors for life, and for many other things too.

This month, the prompt is a quote from 'A river runs through it and other stories' by Normal McLean

"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it."

Starting with this prompt and seeing where the river of inspiration takes you - draw, paint, write, compose a song or poem, collage, photograph, short film or dance your response.
